Science Blog post (Summative)

  1. Describe characteristics of different chemical reactions.

Matches . when sulfur are combine with oxygen and spark, it creates fire. On the matches box, it contains red frosferous, which, when has friction, turn into white frosfurous which is unstable and creates a spark. So when the match is rub with the box, it creates friction and the red frosfurous change to white and it creates spark and when the sparks and oxygen hit the solfur which is on the matches, it light up.

Acid/ base . when acid and base are mixed together it creates bubbles which is carbon dioxide, also it create endothermic reaction. Like for example, when baking soda which is a base is mixed with cream of tartar which is an acid, it will creates carbon dioxide bubbles and endothermic reaction.

Color change . a chemical reaction can be shown in color, such as the mixture of indicator and baking soda which turns blue. or the mixture of indicator and baking powder which turns yellow.

  1. Describe the chemical makeup of baking powder.

Cream of tartar - is an acid. the chemical formula is KC4H5O6, it include one potassium, 4 carbon, 5 hydrogen and 6 oxygen.

this two substances is mixed together to creates baking powder.  When acid and base is mixed together and with water, it creates a chemical reaction. When cream of tartar and baking soda ,which is acid and base, is mixed together with water, it creates carbon dioxide which is the bubble reaction that happens when it is added with water.

Baking soda - is a base. the chemical formula NaHCO3, it contains 1 sodium, 1 hydrogen, 1 carbon, and 3 oxygen.

  1. Describe the process you used to determine the unknown substance.(SI1.A)
to determine the unknown substance, we added universal indictor because each powder react to the indicator in different color so we choose to use the indicator. When we put the indictor into the unknown substance, the result is the color is blue which is the color that is shown in the baking soda. So we know that the unknown substance is baking soda.
4. Describe the process you used to determine which two substances make up baking powder (SI1.A)
to determine the substance, we make a mixture of cream of tartar and baking soda, cream of tartar and cornstarch and baking soda and cornstarch, we use the same idea as the unknown substance, or to put the indicator in. we put the indicator in each or the mixture and the mixture that has the nearest color to baking powder is the mixture of cream of tartar and baking soda. We also make sure by putting vinegar in because if it is baking powder, it would bubbles. The result is that it really bubbles so we conclude that the mixture that creates baking powder is baking soda and cream of tartar.
5. What are some important safety considerations for a Middle School Chemistry lab?
some important safety are such as do not horse play, do not eat anything, do not touch thing, to not smell anything because some chemical may be harmful to your body so stay away from things.
